Pantai Melasti is one of the most striking beaches on the Bukit. A road carved through the white limestone cliffs of Ungasan zigzags down to a long strip of pale sand and turquoise water, with views along the coast and an ornate Balinese gateway at the entrance. The access road and parking are managed by the local village, which charges a small entry fee.
At low tide the reef shelf is exposed and rock pools appear, while at mid to high tide the inshore water is good for a paddle or swim on calm days; always check conditions, as currents can be strong. Several beach clubs and warungs now line the base of the cliff, so you can rent a sunbed, eat lunch or stay on for sunset drinks.
Weekdays and mornings are quieter. The road down is steep, so ride carefully if you are on a scooter. Bring water and sun protection, as there is little natural shade on the sand. The cliffside viewpoints on the way down are a popular photo stop.
Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
