The Warung is the Indonesian restaurant at Alila Villas Uluwatu, the acclaimed contemporary resort on the southern cliffs of the Bukit. Despite the humble name, it is a high-end dining room with dramatic architecture and an outlook over the resort's infinity pool to the ocean nearly 100 metres below. It is open to non-resident diners.
The menu explores Balinese and wider Indonesian cooking, and the set menus are the best way to sample a range of dishes such as grilled seafood, sambals and slow-cooked meats; portions are generous. There is a solid wine and cocktail list, with live music on some evenings.
Open daily from 11:00 to 23:00. Lunch is a good way to enjoy the view in daylight. Prices are high and reviews of the food vary, so go for the setting and the architecture as much as the meal. Book in advance, as access to the resort is by reservation.
Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
