The Ungasan is a clifftop resort of large private villas on the southern edge of Ungasan, looking out over the Indian Ocean towards the reef far below. Villas are spacious, with private pools and generous indoor and outdoor living areas, making it a favourite for families, groups of friends and wedding parties.
The setting is secluded, away from the traffic of the main Uluwatu road, and the resort has a pool and restaurant overlooking the water, with staff on hand for in-villa dining and private celebrations.
Melasti beach and its beach clubs are a short drive east, and the Uluwatu temple is around 20 minutes west. Book well ahead for peak dates, as the larger villas are limited, and ask about transfers from the airport, which is roughly 40 minutes away. The views from the clifftop at sunrise and sunset are spectacular, and the grounds are large enough that groups rarely feel on top of each other.
Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
