Alila Villas Uluwatu is set on a dry limestone plateau about 100 metres above the ocean in Pecatu, south of the main Uluwatu road. The architecture is contemporary and low-slung, with flat green roofs, volcanic stone and timber, and the resort was designed with sustainability in mind. All accommodation is in villas, from one-bedroom pool villas to larger residences, each with its own pool and outdoor living space; many look straight out to sea.
The main infinity pool runs along the cliff edge, and the resort's cabana, perched on a ledge over the water, is used for sunset drinks and private events. Dining includes The Warung, which serves Indonesian dishes in a setting over the cliffs, and the spa offers Balinese treatments.
This is one of the Bukit's top-end resorts and priced accordingly. It is about 40 minutes from the airport. Book through Hyatt's website, and ask for a villa with a direct ocean view.
Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
