Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali's six key directional temples (sad kahyangan), set on a sheer limestone cliff above the Indian Ocean at the end of Jalan Raya Uluwatu in Pecatu. The inner sanctum is reserved for worshippers, so visitors walk the paved clifftop paths on either side, which give the classic views of the shrine on the headland and the surf breaking far below.

The temple grounds are home to a large troop of long-tailed macaques that are notorious for snatching sunglasses, phones and hats; keep loose items in a zipped bag and do not feed them. Sarongs and sashes are required and are provided at the entrance.

Google lists opening hours as daily 07:00–19:00. Late afternoon is the most popular time because it lines up with sunset and the Kecak fire dance next door, but it also brings the heaviest traffic on the single road in; arriving by 16:00 or visiting in the morning is calmer. There is a large car park at the entrance, and an entrance fee is charged.

Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
