Malibu Surf School is run by local instructors from a base at Maria Café on Balangan beach, the long golden-sand bay north of Dreamland. Balangan has a reef-protected inside section where beginners can learn in whitewater, and when conditions there are not right the school moves lessons to nearby breaks such as Dreamland, Jimbaran, Padang Padang, Bingin, Nusa Dua or Kuta.
Standard lessons last two and a half hours: safety and theory on the beach followed by about 90 minutes in the water. At the time of writing a private one-day lesson is IDR 600,000 per person (IDR 1,100,000 for two days), a semi-private lesson for two is IDR 1,000,000, and family or group lessons for three people are IDR 450,000 each. There are shorter kids' lessons from IDR 500,000, a two-hour intermediate session at IDR 600,000 with detailed feedback, surf guiding for those who can already surf and want local knowledge of the breaks, and longboard coaching on cross-stepping and nose-riding.
The school operates every day. Book through the website or by phone, and meet at Maria Café on the beach.
Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
