La Joya Balangan Resort

La Joya sits on the cliff at Balangan, set in large tropical gardens that run to the edge with views along the bay. Accommodation is in thatched bungalows and villas built from limestone and timber, with four-poster beds and, in some, open-air bathrooms. There are two pools, the larger of which is quiet and faces the ocean, a restaurant serving Indonesian and Western food all day, and a small spa.

Yoga classes are held on a platform overlooking the sea, and a long staircase leads down to Balangan beach, its warungs and surf schools. The setting is the draw; some reviewers find the rooms dated and note that sound carries between rooms, so set expectations accordingly. It is a calm, away-from-it-all base rather than a place for nightlife.
