Warung Makan Indonesia is a simple roadside eatery on Jalan Raya Uluwatu, set in a timber shed under large shade trees near the Karang Boma turn-off. It is a genuinely local place, used mostly by Balinese and Indonesian workers, and a good introduction to everyday warung food.
Food is pre-cooked and displayed buffet-style, nasi campur fashion: you point at what you want and it is served on a plate or wrapped in paper with rice. Choices change through the day but usually include fried tempeh and tofu, water spinach, vegetable curries, sambal and some meat dishes, and there are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. Meatball soup (bakso) is also served. A plate costs a fraction of tourist-restaurant prices.
It is open daily from 6am to 9pm. Staff speak limited English and can be shy, so go to the counter and point. Dishes are served at room temperature, as is normal for this style of warung. Take care crossing the main road, which carries fast traffic.
Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
