By The Cliff is a relaxed café and restaurant on the Suluban side of the cliff, with tables on a covered deck looking straight out over the Uluwatu surf break. It is a favourite with surfers checking the waves, and it gets crowded in the morning when the swell is big.

The menu is broad: breakfasts of eggs, waffles and smoothie bowls, salmon wraps and poke bowls at lunch, and burgers and fish later in the day. There is a Brazilian thread running through it, with dishes such as stroganoff and a 'PF' plate that Brazilian visitors recommend, plus mahi mahi with fries. The venue also has a sauna and cold plunge for use after a session.

It is open daily from 8am to 8pm, so come for breakfast or for sunset rather than a late dinner. Service can be slow at busy times, and some find portions small for the price. Access is via the lanes off the Suluban road, a short walk from the steps down to Suluban (Blue Point) beach. Watch your belongings, as monkeys are common on this stretch of cliff.

Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
