Bvlgari Resort Bali is set on the cliffs at Jalan Goa Lempeh, east of Uluwatu Temple, about 160 metres above the Indian Ocean. It has 59 villas and mansions spread among gardens and thatched pavilions, each with a private pool and ocean views. The larger mansions have up to five bedrooms and their own entrances, and every guest has 24-hour butler service.
An inclined lift runs down the cliff to a long stretch of beach below, where La Spiaggia beach club serves lunch and drinks; the sea is better for walks than swimming. On the clifftop are Il Ristorante – Niko Romito for contemporary Italian dinners, the all-day Sangkar restaurant and the Bulgari Bar. The spa uses open-air pavilions, and there is a fitness centre, tennis and yoga.
Expect starting rates well above US$1,000 a night. Check before arrival whether the beach lift is operating, as it has been suspended at times. The resort is quiet, with no evening shows, which suits couples. Reservations can be made by phone or through the Bulgari Hotels website.
Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
