The Butternuts is a casual bistro and coffee shop on Jl. Labuansait, a short walk inland from the Padang Padang beach entrance. The building has a bright yellow-and-glass frontage with a raised timber terrace on the road, and a large, airy dining room inside with long wooden tables and a pool table.
The kitchen serves breakfast and lunch through to early evening: scrambled eggs on toast with bacon, eggs Benedict, pancakes, croissants and açaí and smoothie bowls, plus Indonesian rice bowls such as beef with fried egg and fried snacks with sambal. Coffee is espresso-based, with cappuccinos and lattes, and there are fresh juices. Prices are low for the strip and portions are filling.
Open daily 08:00–20:00. It is quieter than the better-known cafés nearby, which makes it an easy place to find a table after a morning at the beach, and the pool table keeps groups busy while they wait for food. Roadside parking only.
Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
