Shaka Riki is an open-air Japanese restaurant on the southern stretch of Jl. Labuansait, with a tiled terrace, potted palms and lantern-lit tables. The chef-owner cooks most nights and uses traditional Japanese methods, combining imported Japanese ingredients with fresh local produce.
The menu is broad: salmon sashimi, nigiri and rolls (spider and California rolls among them), tonkotsu pork ramen, curried udon, katsu curry, gyoza and pork dumplings, plus grilled mackerel in butter sauce. Vegetarians are well catered for, with vegetable gyoza and other meat-free plates. Every table gets complimentary miso soup and free-flow water, which helps keep the bill reasonable.
Open daily 16:00–22:30, dinner only. There is parking in front. Bring insect repellent, as mosquitoes can be a nuisance on the terrace, and arrive well before closing; a few guests have felt rushed near the end of service. Staff sometimes hand out origami as a parting gift. It is a few minutes by scooter from Padang Padang beach.
Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
