Rock'n Reef is a small group of whitewashed, Mediterranean-influenced bungalows set right on the rocks at Impossibles beach, about 100 m from Padang Padang. The bungalows sit about 90 steps down the cliff, so you sleep with the surf directly below and an uninterrupted 180-degree view of the Indian Ocean.
Each bungalow is private and simply styled, with a terrace for watching the sets roll through and the sunset in the evening. The kitchen serves Balinese-style meals, fresh juices, fruit salads, pancakes and mie goreng throughout the day, which matters here because heading back up to the road for every meal is a commitment. Bingin is about 300 m along the coast and Uluwatu around 3 km.
It suits surfers and couples who want to be as close to the water as possible rather than a full-service hotel. The steps are the only way in and out, so pack light and expect porters to help with bags. At high tide the beach in front disappears, while low tide exposes rock pools and reef. The team can arrange taxis for trips to Uluwatu temple or further afield. Book through the website.
Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
