Cempaka is a modest café attached to a homestay, a short walk inland from the Padang Padang beach entrance on Jl. Labuansait. It is run by its owners, Wayan and Justin, and has a tiled counter, a juice bar and a handful of tables in an airy, simple room.

The menu mixes Western breakfasts, smoothie and açaí bowls, burgers and juices with Indonesian and Thai cooking: nasi goreng, green curry, pad thai and tom yum soup. The smoothies, including a blueberry and spirulina blend, get the most praise; the local dishes are cheap and filling, although quality can vary from dish to dish.

Hours are not posted consistently, so check before making a special trip; guests note that it stays open later than some neighbours, which is useful if you are hungry after other kitchens close. Service is friendly and personal. The rooms upstairs are clean and inexpensive if you need a budget base close to the beach.

Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
