Bumbu Bali is a Tanjung Benoa institution, founded by Swiss chef Heinz von Holzen, who has written several books on Balinese cuisine. Set in a traditional Balinese compound on Jl. Pratama, it combines a restaurant with a cooking school, and it remains one of the most reliable places in the south to try authentic Balinese food.
The signature is the Balinese rijsttafel, a set feast of many small dishes that lets you sample satay, curries, sambals, vegetables and slow-cooked meats in one sitting; it is not overly spicy and is ideal for first-timers. À la carte options include shrimp satay, shredded chicken and beef rendang. Spice mixes are sold to take home.
Open daily for lunch from 11:00 to 15:00 and dinner from 18:00 to 21:30. It works well after a morning of water sports in Tanjung Benoa. Book ahead for dinner or if you want to join a cooking class, which includes a market visit.
Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
