Menega Cafe is one of the long-running seafood cafés on Muaya Beach, the southern stretch of Jimbaran Bay near the Four Seasons. It follows the classic Jimbaran format: you pick your seafood by weight from the iced display near the kitchen, it is grilled over coconut husks with a Balinese basting sauce, and it arrives at a table set out on the sand with rice, sambal and water spinach.

Expect snapper, prawns, clams, squid and lobster, plus set menus for two or more. The view takes in the whole curve of the bay, with planes coming in to land at the airport across the water. It is very busy around sunset; on arrival you head to the beach entrance to be given a table number, then order at the counter. Grilling can take 30 to 45 minutes on a full night.

Arrive by about 17:00 for a front-row table, or book ahead by phone. Check the weight and price of your seafood before it goes on the grill, and bring something for the mosquitoes after dark.

Peak season runs July to August and over Christmas: the best villas and beach-club beds book out early.
